Zinnea and Garden Pictures

Please use my zinnea garden photos freely for school reports and website graphics. I don't mind. It would be nice to mention you found them at www.TheSunflowerLady.com.

Zinneas look beautiful and keep growing up until frost. This garden was beautiful in October when the sunflowers looked dried up. The bees and butterflies were always around them. We often saw hummingbirds checking them out too.

Home Gardening Tips:

  • Zinnea seeds are very small and light. Be careful if it is windy when you sprinkle the seeds in your garden so they don't blow away. Cover them with a quarter inch of soil at most. Be sure to keep the ground moist. Seedlings can dry out easily before the plant gets established.
  • When the zinnea plant is established, weed around it carefully. It looks a bit like a cucumber plant at first, but is easily distinguished from grass and common weeds.
  • An extra dose of fertilizer will keep the zinnea plant producing endless flowers all summer long and brighten your garden until frost. The bees, butterflies and hummingbirds will visit often too.
  • In the fall, before frost, you can gather the mature flowers and harvest the seeds. Let them dry thoroughly. Then shake the dried flower blooms over a large surface, scratching the center "head". When you are certain they are completely dry, poor the dark seeds into an envelop. Keep them dry and cool and save them for next spring planting.
